4 D'S OF ACADEMIC SUCCESS - PART 3
DILIGENCE
Proverbs 22:29 “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men”.
The concept of being diligent encapsulates the earlier mentioned D's (Desire, Determination and Discipline).
Diligence is the quality of working carefully and with a lot of timed effort. Desire fuels Determination. Determination will amount to nothing without Discipline. Discipline as well will be nothing when it's not being practiced diligently. Diligence happens to be the vehicle that conveys desire, determination and discipline to the appropriate and desired destination. The destination we are talking about in this context is 'Academic Success'. Proverbs 10:4 says "Lazy hands makes a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth". Let's make the scripture more empirical: lazy hands could refer to a lazy student who despises reading hence, poor academic performance, while diligent hands could be student who determined to be successful academically by being disciplined, himself to do the needful thing (reading) and crowned the whole exercise by being diligent. Academic excellence is inevitable to such student, because he had paid the price.
Therefore, being diligent is continually doing what is required to get to the desired destination. It is a reoccurring decimal that need to be done regardless of circumstances that may warrant otherwise. If a man is not diligent in what he does, he cannot achieve that which he has set aside to do, that is to say, without all the four D’s aforementioned, such a person cannot achieve great feats. None of these requirements is avoidable. As a farmer goes to his farm with his necessary tools and implements, in such way a student is supposed to be endowed with these attributes if he or she wants to scale higher heights in his/her academic pursuits. A student who is diligent will know that for some certain hours of the day, I should be able to cover certain pages of my books; and he will not allow anything to take away that time. If such a person does not possess this attribute, it’s at that time something comes knocking and he forgets what he had planned to and what he wants to achieve no longer becomes possible.
Being successful academically may not come easy; there are prices that need to be paid. In fact, in this life, nothing ever worth something comes easy except Salvation. As such, climbing the ladder to the peak of one's academic career requires determination, discipline and diligence among others. Academic excellence entails taking the extra mile to achieve the set goals, avoiding any distraction and being on the tracks till one gets to the finishing lines. Students can as well be like their mentors only if they can follow the steps and pathways to achieving success. You have to get up every morning with: desire, determination, discipline and diligence if you want to get back to bed with satisfaction.
In conclusion, it’s not going to be easy, but it’s going to be worth it.
Thank you..
