UNDERSTANDING LEADERSHIP PART 1
Leadership is a status or position of authority attained by an individual called a leader. This is a role of responsibility and accountability taken by such persons. This can also be a led role taken by some individuals in order to carry out some responsibility. We have many people occupying offices of leadership in our world today. We have many leaders today but sadly, not much leadership. The essence of becoming a leader is discovering what you were given to serve your generation.
Leadership is never for the leader but for those who he serves. Leadership is not about ruler-ship, it is about the service you can render to the people you lead. A leader is not about show-manship, but people-manship (if there is anything like that). What happens to the followers should be paramount to the leader the same way what happens to the leader affects his followers. That is the extent to which leader-follower relationship has to go if we are to achieve our desired goals. The same way the bible (1 Corinthians 12:15-31) admonishes us that the head cannot do without the body and the body cannot do without the head, that is the same way leaders and followers are to one another. Without one, the other cannot exist.
Many people have misinterpreted the role of a political leader or any leadership post (social, religious) as a role for only ruler-ship. The problem we are facing, even in our government setup is that our leaders are only loading us, not leading us. A Leader serves the need of those he oversees. If the interest of your followers is not keen in your heart, then you are only ruling, not leading.
For a Leader to stand upright, he needs two important pillars to build on: the CAPACITY building and the CHARACTER building. Therefore, we can define leadership as the CAPACITY to rally men and women to a common purpose and the CHARACTER which inspire confidence. Any leader that wants to function adequately in the office of leadership must pay attention to these powerful pillars. Capacity building is what takes a leader to the leadership position and character is what sustains him.
A man once said "the Bible is not just a book but a living force that creates it's path when applied". This is to say that, there are certain principles in the Bible that help you to create your future when applied. Thus, let us check the scripture to see how leadership is strutured..
Exo 18vs 21(Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:)
Able man is capacity
Fear of God is character
Man of truth is character
Hating covetousness is character
Psa 78vs 72( So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.)
Skillfulness of his hands is capacity
Integrity of his heart is character
Act 6:3(Acts 6: 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.)
Full of the Holy Spirit is capacity
Honest report is character
